The Value of Health IT

The annual HIMSS conference is right around the corner, and it’s time to address one essential question: What is the value of Health IT?

At DICOM Grid our answer is simple: Health IT improves patients’ lives. This response may seem oversimplified, but allow me to elaborate with a true story.

Our team was having lunch with a medical leader at a large hospital institution, who was listening with interest about how cloud storage was so helpful. We asked him if this would apply in his life.

He said that he actually had a case in the hospital now from another hospital and that because he didn’t have the imaging handy, he would have to wait to perform the procedure.

We ended lunch, went back to his office and used our cloud-based storage and transfer to get him the image from out of state in minutes.

At first he was just happy to see the tech work, but then his face darkened and he said with concern, I think the diagnosis is incomplete. This person needs to be in the ICU.

Moving the image more rapidly was core to improving the patient outcome. Delay could have led to complications that could have cost the patient his legs.

From then on, this doctor was a believer.

The speedy delivery of this technology and the doctor’s ability to receive relevant information in real-time prevented the patient from living the rest his life as an amputee.

In these crisis situations, Health IT is invaluable and we are proud to be a part of this life changing industry.
